Many experts agree that eggs are a healthy addition to most diets. Egg yolks contain many nutrients, including folate, iron, calcium, zinc, and vitamins A, D, E, B6 and B12. Eggs also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that support eye health, and choline, which supports brain function.
Eggs have had a controversial reputation due to their high cholesterol content. One large egg contains 213 milligrams of cholesterol, which is more than two-thirds the recommended daily limit of 300 milligrams. However, it has been proven that dietary cholesterol has little effect on heart disease, and the American Heart Association revised its guidelines in 2000 to allow healthy adults to include one egg daily as part of an overall healthy diet.
