Stress can cause mental and physical challenges for individuals that interrupt their daily routines. Stress affects eating habits and energy levels and causes physical ailments such as chest palpitations and headaches, according to WebMD.
The emotional effects of stress can cause people to have difficulty relaxing, think poorly of themselves, become moody and easily frustrated, and force individuals to seek isolation, explains WebMD. Physical ailments possibly sparked by stress include insomnia, chest pains, tense muscles, and nausea, diarrhea or constipation. Some individuals may also experience shaking, cold or sweaty feet or hands, or general nervousness.
Some people also experience cognitive symptoms, such as forgetfulness, disorganization, an inability to focus, poor judgment and racing thoughts, according to WebMD. Negativity and pessimistic behavior could also result from chronic stress. Other behavior affected by stress can include procrastination, an avoidance of responsibilities, changes in appetite, and nervous behaviors such as fidgeting, pacing and nail biting. Stress can also cause an increased use of cigarettes, drugs or alcohol.
Stress can affect an individual's personal appearance as well, as permanent hair loss, psoriasis, acne and eczema can develop as a result of stress, explains WebMD. Some people experience eating disorders and obesity with the onset of stress.
