Family Doctor claims that Aloe Vera cream or an antibiotic cream are the best ointments for burns. The doctors from the American Academy of Family Physicians, which operates FamilyDoctor.org, also recommend taking an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with the pain while healing occurs.
Depending on the degree of the burn, further action than ointment may need to be taken. Family Doctor says that a burn victim should soak a second degree burn in cold water for 15 minutes, and then put cool wet clothes on it for a few minutes a day. For third degree burns, Family Doctor says to always seek immediate medical attention, do not touch the burn to anything, and try to keep it above the level of the heart if possible.
