Effective home remedies for acne include toothpaste, raw egg whites, garlic and honey, according to Tom Scheve for HowStuffWorks. Lemons and oatmeal may also work, as may water from cooked green beans or solutions made from basil.
Though none of these home remedies have scientific studies to back them up as of 2015, some people say the remedies work well, explains Scheve. Toothpaste is one method that may work, and to use it, people simply apply a dab to the acne and leave it on overnight. Raw egg whites is another common home remedy for acne, and people apply it to the face in hopes the substance dries up the oil. People also do the same with garlic paste to prevent new breakouts.
Honey is a natural antibacterial substance, and people apply it to the face, allow it to dry, and then wear it overnight, states Scheve. People who use it believe it fights bacteria and helps to reduce acne. People also use lemon juice on the skin, or even rub a lemon slice onto the space, as it contains glycolic acid, which helps to exfoliate the skin. Other treatments to fight acne at home include washing the face regularly, using an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide solution or managing stress by exercising.
