The only way to cure a scabies infection is by getting a prescription medication from a doctor, says eMedicineHealth. At-home treatments, such as bleach, lemon, olive oil and hydrogen peroxide, have not been shown to be effective.
To cure scabies, a doctor will prescribe a cream that can kill the mites on the skin according to MedicineNet. These creams must be applied on the entire body from the neck down and left on throughout the night. In cases where people cannot use these prescription creams or the creams were ineffective, people can apply 1 ounce of a 1 percent lotion overnight and then wash it off. However, these lotions come with risks of seizure and should not be used if you have a skin infection, are pregnant or nursing, are elderly or are under 2 years old. Therefore, these lotions should only be used as a second option after prescription creams have been tried.
Besides using prescription creams, there are also things you can do at home to ensure that a re-infestation of scabies does not occur, states eMedicineHealth. These include washing all linens using hot water, cutting and cleaning fingernails and toenails, vacuuming carpets and furniture, and trying not to scratch the infected areas on your skin.
