Effective remedies for a head cold include drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and getting lots of rest, according to Mayo Clinic. Gargling with saltwater helps to ease a sore throat, and over-the-counter saline sprays help to clear nasal passages.

There is no cure for the common cold, but home remedies can alleviate some of the symptoms, states Mayo Clinic. Drinking hot fluids, such as chicken soup, warm apple cider or tea, helps to increase mucus flow and clear congestion. Using a humidifier or vaporizer adds moisture to the air and helps with congestion.

Acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen are effective for pain relief in adults, according to Mayo Clinic. Children who are 6 months old or younger should not be given aspirin or ibuprofen, and parents should exercise caution when giving aspirin to children over 3 years of age. Over-the-counter cold and cough medicines, decongestants and antihistamines may help relieve symptoms, but they should only be taken by adults and children over the age of 5. All medications should be taken as directed, and most have side effects.

A person suffering from a cold should blow his nose regularly, advises WebMD. To properly clear the nose, a person should press a finger over one nostril and gently blow to clear the other nostril. Blowing too hard causes mucus to travel back into the ear passages and can cause an earache.
