Contrary to popular belief, crunches and sit-ups are not the best exercises to lose belly fat. The popularity of these exercises is based on the outmoded theory of spot reduction, the idea that a person can burn fat in a specific area of the body by exercising only that area. As of 2015, experts now say that spot reduction does not work.
While crunches only target the muscles on the front and sides of the abdomen, it's necessary to engage all of the core muscles at once to burn more belly fat. These include the muscles of the lower back and hips as well as the upper thighs.
Sit-ups can help to tone the stomach by strengthening the main abdominal muscle, known as the rectus abdominis, but sit-ups do not aid in burning belly fat. Only cardiovascular exercises that elevate the heart rate, such as biking or swimming, are effective at burning fat.Learn more about Exercise
