A dull pain on the right side under the ribcage can indicate biliary colic, a condition that results when gallstones prevent bile from flowing normally from the gallbladder, explains Baylor Scott & White Health. Pain from biliary colic sometimes travels to the right shoulder blade, notes Women's Health.
People with biliary colic have about a 25 percent risk of developing a gallbladder infection or other gallstone-related problem between 10 and 20 years after the problem starts, as Baylor Scott & White Health explains. Because bile is involved in the digestion of fat, doctors recommend that patients reduce the amount of fat in their diets. Gallbladder removal surgery may be necessary depending on the severity of the case.
