As of June 2015, Dukoral is not available over the counter, according to Drugs.com. Dukoral, available by prescription only, is an oral vaccine that protects against cholera, a dangerous disease that individuals contract from water or food contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria.
Dukoral contains part of the cholera toxin and inactivated cholera bacteria. The body's immune system recognizes the toxin and bacteria and produces antibodies to fight it. This process enables the body to react quickly if it is exposed to active bacteria or toxins later, explains Drugs.com. Studies show that while Dukoral is about 85 percent effective, it is not a substitute for standard protective measures, such as good hygiene and proper diet. Doctors prescribe Dukoral for adults and children at least 2 years old who plan to visit areas where cholera is present and there is a high risk of becoming infected.
