The drug Silvadene is a topical medication used to help prevent and treat wound infections, according to WebMD. It is used in patients with severe burns. Silver sulfadiazine is the active ingredient in Silvadene.
Silver sulfadiazine stops the growth of bacteria that may infect an open wound. In serious burns, this action decreases the risk of bacteria spreading to surrounding healthy skin or to the blood, where it can cause sepsis. Silver sulfadiazine is classified as a sulfa antibiotic, explains WebMD. Silvadene is also used to help treat skin ulcers, as well as other skin and wound infections. The medication is applied to a wound sterilely one to two times a day, and treatment with Silvadene continues until the wound is completely healed or until the burn is ready for skin grafting.
