In weight training, a drop set is one of a group of sets in a weightlifting exercise that is performed until muscle failure. Each subsequent set in the group entails using less, or dropping, weight.
Some different ways to perform drop sets include stripping the bar, upping the stack or downing the rack. When stripping the bar, a weightlifter uses a barbell with multiple small weights that are removed between sets. When upping the stack, a weightlifter utilizes fewer and fewer plates on a weight machine. When a weightlifter goes down the rack, he uses lighter dumbbells as the sets progress.
Additional variations in drop sets are achieved by the amount of weight dropped for each set, the number of repetitions per set or the amount of rest time between sets, with the goal being inability to perform one more repetition at the end of each set.
