Cherry juice, tart cherries and tart cherry extract are all effective remedies for gout, states Dr. Andrew Weil. Additionally, a Northumbria University study indicated that drinking tart cherry juice twice daily temporarily lowered the blood uric acid levels of healthy patients for up to eight hours after consuming the drink.
Other ways to treat and decrease the risk of developing the painful arthritic condition include limiting the consumption of red meats high in uric acid and purine-rich foods, states Dr. Weil. Eliminating coffee and drinks high in caffeine and decreasing alcohol intake are also helpful. Overweight persons are also advised to lose weight, and everyone should drink eight glasses of water daily to reduce the risk of gout, adds Dr. Weil.
