Dr. Terry Wahls contends that a paleo diet, with the proper essential nutrients, improves health and reduces symptoms in those suffering from autoimmune diseases. She has developed a specific paleo protocol that emphasizes 31 essential vitamins, antioxidants, fatty acids and minerals that are critical for brain cell growth, including iodine, selenium and all of the B vitamins.
Dr. Wahls, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, asserts that following her paleo diet protocol reversed many symptoms of her own condition. Dr. Wahls asserts that food sources of essential nutrients are better than medications and supplements since, in their natural form, they are biologically active and eliminate the intake of added synthetic compounds.
Dr. Wahls' structured paleo diet fights inflammation and reduces or eliminates genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, which add risk for multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune-related conditions. The paleo diet, which eliminates grains and emphasizes whole foods such as meat, seafood, vegetables, nuts and fruit, is controversial with many doctors and nutritionists. However, Dr. Wahls contends that the nutrient density of her protocol exceeds the recommended daily allowance for all 31 essential nutrients.
Mantra-based meditation, exercise and self-massage are included as part of Dr. Wahls' diet protocol for treating MS patients and reducing fatigue through neuromuscular stimulation. Additionally, she is extending her research to study the effects of her diet protocol in people suffering from Parkinson's disease and fibromyalgia.
