Dr. Christiane Northrup is a writer and speaker on women's health topics who practiced as an obstetrician and gynecologist for 25 years, her official website explains. In her books, she makes several claims the mainstream medical community does not support, according to Science-Based Medicine.
In 1994, Dr. Northrup released her first book on women's health and well-being, "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom," states her official website. In 2001, she published "The Wisdom of Menopause," a book in which she proposes that menopause is a revolution of the mind and body that can bring women great happiness. She makes this claim in opposition to the more mainstream notion that menopause is a set of negative symptoms to endure or treat. She is also responsible for two additional books on the topic of menopause, "The Secret Pleasures of Menopause" and "The Secret Pleasures of Menopause Playbook." Dr. Northrup's 2015 book, "Goddesses Never Age: The Secret Prescription for Radiance, Vitality and Well-Being," is an inspirational book about aging.
Dr. Northrup promotes the use of several controversial therapies and medical practices, including Chinese herbal remedies, nonstandard laboratory tests and very high doses of vitamin A for heart disease prevention, notes Science-Based Medicine. Another one of her controversial claims is that women sometimes develop thyroid problems because they spend too much of their time "swallowing" words they desire to verbalize.
