The Atkins low-carb diet restrict the amount of carbohydrates that are consumed while adding foods that are high in protein, according to Vanderbilt University. A diet of this kind puts the body into ketosis, which is a process that released stored body fat for fuel. This results in loss of weight. Depending on which phase of the Atkins plan is chosen, carbohydrates are limited to 15 to 60 grams per day. Consumption of fat is also encouraged on this diet. Plan participants eat no fruit, grains, breads or starchy vegetables during the initial phase, although other foods are added as participants meet their weight-loss goals.
The diet is also heralded among critics for its ability to reduce cravings for foods. Because dieters on the Atkins plan are less hungry than when consuming high carbohydrate diets, they tend to stay satisfied longer and eat less. Blood sugar levels are also reduced throughout the day, which reduces cravings and eliminates hunger pangs.Learn more about Diet Plans
