What Are the Different Types of Muscular Dystrophy?

Major types of muscular dystrophy include myotonic, Becker and Duchenne, according to WebMD. Additional types of muscular dystrophy include distal, congenital, oculopharyngeal, facioscapulohumeral and limb-girdle.

Myotonic muscular dystrophy, which is the most common type, most commonly attacks adult men and women, notes WebMD. Though rare, it may also occur in newborn babies. Becker muscular dystrophy, unlike myotonic, is less severe and attacks only males. Typically, it occurs in children between the ages of 2 and 16 and develops gradually, resulting in cardiac problems. However, it can appear in males up to 25 years of age.

Duchenne is another type of muscular dystrophy that mostly attacks children, says WebMD. It is similar to Becker in that it affects only males. It first appears between the age of 2 and 6.
