Different types of braces include metal, ceramic, self-ligating and clear aligners, states Eckels Orthodontics. Metal braces constructed from high-quality, stainless steel, incorporating brackets, elastics and archwires are the most common.
Ceramic braces are less visible than the metal type and are often used on older patients, notes Eckels Orthodontics. Self-ligating braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but use a special clip rather than elastics to connect the archwire to the brackets. This results in less pressure on the teeth and fewer office visits to make adjustments. Clear aligners are a series of trays made from nearly invisible acrylic and are removable, making brushing and flossing easier during treatment.
