The different types of eye doctors are ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticians, according to the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. While each type of eye doctor provides essential eye care to patients, their levels of skill and training differ.
An ophthalmologist is an eye and vision specialist who has completed college and eight years of medical training; he diagnoses, treats and performs surgery on eye conditions. An optometrist is one who has completed four years of optometry school after college; he tests vision, diagnoses vision problems and prescribes medication for eye disorders. An optician is a trained technician who designs eyeglasses and frames and fits them. He also issues contact lenses using prescriptions from ophthalmologists and optometrists.
