Maalox and Mylanta are medications used to treat heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, gas pressure and bloating. These medications are to be used by individuals 12 years of age and older. Unless otherwise directed by a doctor, 2 to 4 teaspoons of the medication should be taken between meals and at bedtime to relieve symptoms. Maalox suggests that no more than 16 teaspoons should be taken in a 24 hour time period. Mylanta suggests that no more than 24 teaspoons should be taken in a 24 hour time period. Symptoms should be reported to a doctor if they persist for more than 2 weeks.
People who have kidney disease and people who are on a magnesium restricted diet should contact their physician before taking either of these medications.
