What Are Diet Recommendations After an Ileostomy Reversal?

Within the five weeks following ileostomy reversal, patients should avoid eating certain foods, maintain a bland diet consisting of more fiber, and drink six to eight glasses of water daily, according to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Foods to avoid include spicy dishes, gravy and cream sauces.

In the first four weeks following ileostomy reversal, it is important to chew food carefully, eat slowly and consume smaller meals five or six times a days, according to MSK. Eliminate heavy lifting and exercise, to prevent a hernia of the bowel. Clean the anus with warm soapy water, and use wipes and creams as necessary. Also, take a probiotic supplement consisting of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract and promote bowel function naturally.

In the five weeks following surgery, add more fiber back into the diet, states MSK. Incorporate a bland diet if experiencing multiple bowel movements daily. Avoid dairy, fried foods, high-fat deli meats, fruit juices, sugar-free foods and pork products such as sausage and bacon.

Take a fiber supplement daily, recommends MSK. If gas becomes a problem, take an over-the-counter medicine to relieve the pressure. If there are any concerns or questions, address them with the physician or nurse, advises Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
