A person with a gastric sleeve starts by sipping clear liquids the day after surgery and then consumes pureed foods for four weeks, advises Floyd Center for Bariatric Services. Four weeks after surgery, the individual begins eating semi-solid foods. About three months post-surgery, he adds low-fat solid foods.
The four-week diet of pureed foods allows the stomach pouch to heal, explains Floyd Center for Bariatric Services. When the individual adds semi-solid and low-fat solid foods, he adds one food at a time to ensure that he tolerates each one. For the rest of his life, an individual with a gastric sleeve must also take a daily multivitamin that includes iron and zinc and a calcium supplement to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
