Yoga originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The techniques in yoga are designed to improve health and longevity, as well as to obtain a higher self-awareness.
The word "yoga" means "to join together," and the system of yoga relies on three main factors that work in tandem: breathing, exercise and meditation. The movements are designed to place gentle pressure on the glands of the body, thereby increasing circulation and vitality. Breathing techniques are used during the movements to connect the intake of air with each movement. Meditation is meant to quiet the mind and provide stress relief and clarity.
There are over a hundred different types of yoga, including Hatha yoga, Tantra yoga and Karma yoga. Hatha yoga is the most widely recognized form of yoga.
