Resting the shoulder is the first step in treatment, though small movements should still be attempted, states WebMD. Doctors advise that patients should limit any repetitive movements, and the patient should put the shoulder through a full range of motion each day.
Ice or heat are other treatment methods for a rotator cuff injury, explains WebMD. It is best to begin with icing the shoulder for about 48 hours, as ice helps to reduce swelling and inflammation. Do this two to three times a day. After the initial 48 hours, moist heat is recommended, two to three times a day. This is easy to do by taking a towel, soaking it in hot water and wringing it out. Place the towel on the shoulder and gently swing the arm back and forth. This can also be done under a hot shower.
