The Daniel Plan is a healthy lifestyle program that's based on the Bible, specifically the story of Daniel. Pastor Rick Warren created the program in 2011, and its components are faith, food, fitness, focus and friends.
On the program, dieters eat whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables and nuts. Highly processed foods, white flour, and drinks with high sugar content or caffeine are not allowed. The diet recommends that each meal consist of 50 percent nonstarchy vegetables, 25 percent lean protein through either healthy animal meat or vegetables, and 25 percent whole grains or starchy vegetables. The meal can include a side of low-glycemic fruit. Water or tea are the recommended beverages.
Warren based the diet on the Bible passage where Daniel refuses the royal food and wine and instead chooses to eat vegetables and water. Warren, Dr. Daniel Amen and Dr. Mark Hyman released a guide to the Daniel Plan, called "The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life" on Dec. 3, 2013.
Since the program is religious, prayer is recommended. It also recommends getting an adequate amount of sleep, exercising daily and doing the program with a friend or a group. The program recommends dieters perform any exercise that they enjoy to ensure they exercise consistently.
