To treat wound and bruise inflammation naturally without the use of medications, individuals can use the RICE method of rest, ice, compression and elevation, explains WebMD. The RICE method is known to reduce swelling and pain and promote healing and flexibility.
The RICE treatment begins with resting and protecting the areas of inflammation, states WebMD. Individuals should temporarily avoid an activity that may cause pain or soreness while inflammation is present. Since cold temperature can reduce inflammation, apply ice or an ice pack directly to the areas of inflammation three times a day in 10- to 20- minute intervals. If the swelling subsides after 48 to 72 hours, apply heat to reduce pain. Wrap the ice or heat pack using a towel to avoid direct contact with the skin.
Individuals can wrap the areas of inflammation with an elastic bandage to reduce pain and swelling, according to WebMD. Do not wrap the elastic bandage too tightly to avoid further swelling. Signs the bandage is too tight include numbness, tingling and increased pain or swelling. Individuals should also attempt to elevate the areas of inflammation while applying ice. It is ideal to keep the area elevated at or above the level of the heart.
