A doctor can help plan an exercise routine, and even if a person starts off slow, just 10 minutes of exercise a day can make a difference. Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruit is also important, as is limiting sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams a day.
Those who use tobacco or drink an excess of alcohol are at a higher risk for having high blood pressure, states Mayo Clinic. Drinking only the recommended amount of alcohol and eliminating all tobacco intake is one way to lower blood pressure.
