Extreme pressure on these disks, such as those caused by lifting heavy objects, are a common cause for herniated disks. This can put those with physically demanding jobs at an increased risk for slipped disks.
Overweight individuals are at increased risk of herniations, reports Healthline, because their heavy body weight is supported by the vertebrae. Older individuals have lower water content in their disks and therefore experience more slipped disks. Weak back muscles contribute to the risk of developing a slipped disk as well.
Slipped disks can cause a range of symptoms, states Healthline. Numbness or pain can result, especially affecting only one side of the body. Often, this pain travels from the back into the arms or legs, and may cause muscular weakness in the limbs. The pain may worsen at night or after walking, while some slipped disks cause pain after the individual sits for some time. Some individuals experience tingling or burning sensations instead of pain.
