Around 46 percent of pharmacists recommend Delsym, available over the counter, for suppressing a cough, according to a survey by U.S. News & World Report and Pharmacy Times in 2014. Runners-up include Robitussin, recommended by 29 percent of pharmacists, and Mucinex DM, recommended by 23 percent.
The survey also looked at pharmacists’ recommendations for cold remedies in general, notes U.S. News & World Report. Of the available over-the-counter remedies, Cepacol won recommendation by 27 percent of pharmacists in the survey, followed by Zicam, recommended by 23 percent of participants. Just 21 percent of pharmacists recommended Cold-EEZE, while 14 percent recommended Halls Defense, and 6 percent recommended Sucrets.
