To use a cane, hold the cane beside the stronger leg, and move the cane and the weaker leg simultaneously. Holding the cane next to the stronger leg ensures that the stronger leg takes the majority of body weight.
Ensure the cane is the correct size to maximize the benefits. A correctly sized cane should reach up to the wrist of the patient when standing upright. Keep the elbow slightly bent when holding the cane. To walk, first move the cane forward with the weaker leg, then keep the cane stationary, and bring the stronger leg up to meet it.
To climb stairs, place the stronger leg on the next step first, then move up the weaker leg and the cane. Use the railing for extra support.
