Individuals should not only limit their alcoholic intake in order to decrease nerve pain, but they should drink as little as possible or not at all, states WebMD. Only two alcoholic drinks a week can damage nerves, so the fewer the drinks, the less nerve pain a diabetic experiences. Alcohol damages nerves because the liver must split its time between trying to regulate blood sugar levels and removing toxins from the body. However, removing toxins comes first, so blood sugar levels spike, further damaging the body. Furthermore, alcohol can worsen neuropathy pain.

For instance, a diabetic can still enjoy the tomato juice, lemon juice and salt of a Virgin Mary as long as the liquor is avoided.
