Garlic has been studied as a treatment for high cholesterol, and it is a good option for the short term, according to WebMD. Garlic can thin the blood, so it should not be taken with blood-thinning medication or before surgical procedures. Guggulipid has been used for more than 3,000 years, and in Indian studies, it has been shown to lower cholesterol significantly. Other studies have shown the opposite, however, and there are no scientific studies to show the safety of guggulipid.
Red yeast rice has been shown to lower cholesterol in studies, explains WebMD; however, the Food and Drug Administration does not allow red yeast rice to be marketed as a way to lower cholesterol. Policosano, which is produced from sugar cane, has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol in a number of studies. There have not, however, been studies that focus on the safety or efficacy of policosano.
