Companies that provide transportation for seniors include public transit systems, paratransit services, private transportation companies and volunteer driver programs. The transportation may be route-based shared rides to a common destination or door-to-door service.
Public transportation companies may offer senior discounts and special vans that pick up at the door. Paratransit rides are for people with disabilities, but this may include seniors who cannot walk to or stand at a bus stop.
Private transportation companies, such as TransNet in suburban Philadelphia, provide free rides for medical appointments, shopping and travel to senior centers. Seniors must call to reserve rides at least one day in advance.
RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteers Program, has a volunteer driver program in many communities. Seniors may call to request rides to medical appointments, for grocery shopping and for other important trips.
