The American Lung Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Association offer printable asthma action plans. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta provides separate plans specifically for younger and older children. Plans typically display information about patients' daily medication needs and outline the steps to follow if asthma attacks occur.
Action plans also contain contact information for patients' physicians. Plans from the American Lung Association, NHLBA and Children's Healthcare are color-coded green, yellow and red to display increasingly dangerous symptoms. NHLBA's plan also provides a checklist of potential asthma triggers for patients to personalize. Both plans from Children's Healthcare use illustrations to help youngsters identify their medical status.
