The treatment for knee pain depends on the severity of the pain; in most cases, mild or moderate injuries can heal on their own over time, explains WebMD. Resting the knee for a couple of days and avoiding activity that is intense can help to eliminate knee pain. Icing the knee is also a good treatment to reduce pain in the knee. To do this, the individual should place an ice pack on the knee for about 15 to 20 minutes every three to four hours. Compression of the knee with a strap, elastic bandage or sleeve can also help, as it supports the joint and reduces swelling.
A doctor may also suggest the elevation of the knee as a way to reduce pain and swelling in the joint, notes WebMD. Over-the-counter pain relievers are also a treatment option, especially anti-inflammatory medication such as Aleve or Advil. Individuals must remember, however, that these pain medications may have side effects. Stretching and strengthening of the knee can also help the pain, but an individual must only do the exercises that a doctor suggests.
