Hip pain that occurs when an individual puts pressure on the affected hip when lying down may be caused by trochanteric hip bursitis, as stated by WebMD. The small sacs of fluid that are between the tendons and bones can become irritated, causing tenderness, swelling and redness around the affected hip.
Other common causes of hip pain include osteoarthritis, an injury such as a fracture or dislocation, sciatica, tendonitis and osteoporosis, as reported by Mayo Clinic.
In the short term, many cases of hip pain can be relieved by resting and icing the inflamed area. Over a longer period of time, achieving a healthy weight, strengthening the hip area with exercise and using implements to reduce the amount of pressure on the hip reduce pain levels.
