Lower spine issues, varicose veins, poor circulation and blood clots may also cause leg pain. Pain in the leg can affect either the whole leg or isolated portions, and can develop either suddenly or gradually, depending upon its cause. It can also vary in its duration and frequency.
Deep cuts of the leg, especially those that leave exposed tendon or bone, require immediate emergency care, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Other emergency situations include being unable to walk or put weight on the leg, hearing a popping or grinding sound at the time of the injury, and pain, redness or swelling in the calf. Swelling that is accompanied with breathing difficulty and signs of infection or fever require medical attention as soon as possible. Serious leg pain that seemingly develops for no reason is also cause for concern.
Home remedies can be effective for treating mild leg pain, states the Mayo Clinic. These include staying off the affected leg as much as possible, elevating the leg, and regularly applying ice in intervals of 15 to 20 minutes. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are effective as well.
