Ciprofloxacin is used to treat bacterial complications that may include typhoid, intestinal infections, gonorrhea of the urethra, traveler's diarrhea, bacterial pneumonia, urinary tract infection, abscess in the abdomen, skin infection, bacterial infection of the kidney and chronic bronchitis. The drug is an antibiotic, which means it can only treat conditions that are caused by bacteria.
While ciprofloxacin is an effective treatment for bacterial complications, it has side effects that may include stomachache, nausea, restlessness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn and headache, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Overuse or using the drug without following the doctor's instructions may lead to multiple complications or render the drug ineffective. It generally works by stalling the spread or activity of bacteria within the human body system.
The drug is also used to prevent the spread of conditions that may be brought about due to biological attacks. If, for example, there is a deliberate release of anthrax, plague or tularemia in the country, ciprofloxacin can be used to contain the situation.
When taking this drug, people are advised to avoid caffeine-rich products, including energy drinks, colas, chocolate and tea. This is because the drug tends to increase the effect of caffeine within the body.
