According to WebMD, some recent studies suggest that taking a multivitamin has little to no effect on a patient's health. The studies were released in the Dec. 17, 2013 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. In one of the studies, 6,000 male doctors over the age of 65 took a daily pill that was either a placebo pill or a Centrum Silver pill. The participants were tested every several years for the course of 12 years, and there was no difference in brain health between those who took the placebo pills and the actual Centrum vitamins.

According to WebMD, another study that was published at the same time in Annals of Internal Medicine tested 1,700 heart attack survivors. Some of the participants were given high doses of vitamins, while others were given placebo pills. There was no significant health difference between the participants after 55 months.
