Foot pain localized to the heel area can be caused by plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, deep bruises or fractures, according to WebMD. Pain in the ball of the foot may be due to sesamoiditis, metatarsalgia or Morton's neuroma. Fallen arches and plantar fasciitis may cause arch pain.

People who experience pain in their toes may be suffering from bunions, ingrown toenails, arthritis, claw toes, hammer toes or turf toe, as stated by WebMD. Additional causes of toe pain include corns, tendon or soft tissue sprains, sesamoid fractures, hallux rigidus or calluses. Generalized foot pain may be caused by neuropathy, sudden injury, frequent exposure to uncomfortable footwear, complications from diabetes or tendinitis.

In many instances, foot pain can be treated with pain medication and the use of customized supportive footwear and shoe inserts, such as orthotics, according to WebMD. Patients may also require the guidance of a physical therapist to retrain damaged tendons or ligaments in the affected foot. In more serious cases, patients may require surgery to remove a bone spur or repair damaged bones or tissues. Patients suffering from foot pain are often advised to rest and keep weight off of the injured foot to allow their complication to heal.
