Obesity is caused by a combination of genetics, socioeconomic environment, metabolism and lifestyle choices. However, taking in more calories than what is expended leads to obesity, says Stanford Health Care. The effects of obesity are serious and include heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and bone diseases.
Lifestyle choices such as choosing to be inactive, overeating, and eating low-cost, refined and fast foods that are often high in sodium, sugar and saturated fat play a huge role in obesity. Environmental factors such as lack of access to and knowledge of healthy foods often encourage obesity as well, says the National, Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Some people are more predisposed to obesity than others, according to Stanford Health Care. Studies show that the chance for obesity increases by 25 percent when one or both of the parents is obese. Additionally, hormonal and metabolic factors are not the same across the board, so some people have different levels of hormones responsible for triggering the appetite and the feeling of fullness.
Obesity can be treated through diligent dieting, exercising, changing to a healthier environment or seeking surgical treatment. Since no two people are alike, it is important for each individual to set an attainable weight-loss goal, suggests Stanford Health Care.
