Carbohydrates cause the body's blood sugar level to shift more rapidly than proteins or fats, notes WebMD. People with diabetes should try to eat complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates such as sugar. Because complex carbohydrates such as beans, nuts, vegetables and whole grains take longer than simple carbohydrates to digest, they provide more enduring energy throughout the day. Complex carbohydrates also provide the body with fiber.
In order to control blood sugar levels, some people with diabetes count carbohydrates throughout the day and split them up evenly among meals, states WebMD. A single serving of carbohydrates is 15 grams. On average, adults with diabetes eat approximately one or two servings of carbohydrates for snacks and three or four servings for each meal.
It is important to speak to a qualified health care professional or a registered dietitian before forming a carbohydrate counting plan, recommends WebMD. Eating more carbohydrates than the body's insulin can cope with can cause the blood sugar level to increase, and not eating enough carbohydrates can cause the blood sugar level to decrease.
