MedicalVideos.org offers a video of a gynecologist performing a Pap smear. Viewers can also see a five-minute Pap smear video at the OBGYN Skills Lab from Brookside Associates.
Gynecologists perform Pap smears on women to check for cervical cancer, explains Mayo Clinic. Also called a Pap test, the procedure collects cells from the cervix, which is the narrow end of the uterus just above the vagina.
During the procedure, the doctor opens the vagina with a device called a speculum and takes a sample of cells using a plastic spatula and brush, notes WebMD. After collecting the sample, the doctor places it in a solution and then sends it to a lab. The results usually come back in a week.
