A video of a colposcopy procedure is available from About.com as of 2015. Although it does not provide a close-up view of the woman's body during the procedure, it depicts the overall process and explains that a doctor performs a colposcopy as a result of an abnormal PAP smear.
Doctors perform many thousands of colposcopies in the United States annually, and they do not detect cancer in 98 out of 100 cases, explains About.com. During the procedure, a woman lies on her back with her knees bent, her feet in stirrups, and her bottom at the edge of the examining table. The physician then uses a lighted colposcope, which is a type of microscope, to check out the woman's cervix without the instrument entering the woman's body.
