Treat an abscess at home using warm compresses, warm-water rinses and anti-inflammatory medications, according to WebMD. Proper treatment depends on whether the abscess is located inside or outside the mouth.
For an abscess outside the mouth, apply a warm compress for 30 minutes four times a day, states WebMD. Only undertake this treatment if the abscess is less than one-half inch across. Treat abscesses in the mouth with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications containing naproxen or ibuprofen. If an abscess in the mouth ruptures, treat it by rinsing with warm water. The warm-water rinse helps clean the mouth and aids in abscess draining.
