To reduce and even stop lactic acid from taking the joy out of a workout, begin any exercise regime slowly and build up the intensity and duration gradually. Begin with simple aerobic exercises, such as brisk walking or jogging, and over a period of one or two weeks, increase the pace and duration. This enables the body to increase its tolerance, thereby increasing the lactate threshold.
Drink plenty of water before and after exercising. Water helps to remove excess acid, according to WebMD. Drink between eight and 16 ounces of water before the workout and eight ounces after every 20 minutes of the workout. Another healthy habit that helps prevent lactic acidosis is eating lean meats, fruits, whole grain foods and fresh vegetables.
Talk to a doctor before starting a new exercise program, and get plenty of rest between workouts (at minimum until all the effects of the acid build-up have gone). Stop exercising and cool down as soon as the effects of lactic acid accumulation begin, states WebMD. Drink water and rest completely.
