The Mayo Clinic explains the ways to get rid of kidney stones include drinking large quantities of water, use of medication to relax the ureter muscles to facilitate passage of the stone, undergoing a procedure called extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and undergoing surgery. Kidney stones may not cause pain until they have moved into an individual’s ureter. Once this occurs, the individual may experience severe lower abdominal and groin pain.
The most common type of kidney stones are calcium stones, which are in the form of calcium oxalate. Calcium oxalate is found in nuts and chocolate along with certain fruits and vegetables. Eating too many of these products as well as consuming high doses of calcium supplements increases an individual’s chances of having kidney stones. Having had intestinal bypass surgery also increases a person’s chances. Risk factors include dehydration, being over the age of 40, being male, and diets high in protein and sodium.
According to the Mayo Clinic, an inexpensive and effective way to avoid future kidney stones is to drink 2.6 quarts of water a day. Individuals need to monitor the color of their urine to make sure they are drinking plenty of water. Light and clear urine indicates adequate water intake.
