A person who suffers from sciatica should avoid resting for prolonged periods to avoid worsening the condition, states Mayo Clinic. Medications that aid in alleviating the pain include ibuprofen, such as Advil and Motrin IB, and naproxen sodium, such as Aleve. Stretching the lower back may offer comfort and reduce pain related to nerve root compression. Maintain the stretch for more than 30 seconds, and avoid bouncing, twisting and making sharp, sudden movements.
Placing an ice pack over the affected area for about 20 minutes several times every day may help in counteracting the pain, explains Mayo Clinic. Putting a hot pack on the area three days later may also be helpful. Using both warm and cold packs alternatively may work for persistent symptoms.
