Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are commonly used to relieve pain associated with inflammation, according to WebMD. Some examples of NSAIDs include ibuprofen, aspirin, etodolac, diclofenac and fenoprofen. Other ways to reduce pain and inflammation include heat therapy, cold therapy, electrical stimulation, massage and acupuncture, notes Merck Manual.
Using heat therapy decreases inflammation and helps reduce fluid buildup, explains Merck Manual. It may be applied using hot packs, heated wax baths or warm water. Cold therapy also reduces inflammation and numbs tissue to relieve pain. To avoid tissue damage, it's important to limit the time of exposure to cold therapy, and avoid using it on areas of the body with reduced blood flow.
