In 1905, A.L. McLauren, a pharmacist in Cleveland, Ohio, developed a mustard ointment that became the famous nonprescription product Musterole, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History. People used the popular ointment to relieve coughs, irritated throats, congested chests and aching muscles. The Musterole Company manufactured the medication in Ohio until 1956, when the Plough Corporation of Tennessee purchased it and relocated production to Memphis.
