The BPI Perio website has photos showing healthy teeth and gums, as well as photos of the four stages of gum disease. The appearance of gingivitis is subtle; however the symptoms of early periodontitis are noticeable as the gums begin to separate from the teeth.
Signs of advanced periodontitis include bleeding gums, redness, inflammation and separation of the gum from the tooth, causing deep periodontal pockets. As the periodontitis worsens, the bones supporting the teeth in the jaw become damaged, often resulting in the loss of the tooth. Good dental hygiene is the best way to prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease.
